Premium rear-facing seats increasingly advertise one or both of these, and the marketing rarely explains what they do. Both are genuine engineering rather than decoration — but both are supplementary, and neither compensates for a loose install or a badly adjusted harness.
What a crash does to a rear-facing seat
In a frontal impact the vehicle stops and everything inside continues forward. A rear-facing seat rotates: the child's end moves down and toward the vehicle seat back, spreading crash forces across the whole back and head. That is the mechanism that makes rear-facing so effective.
Then there is a second phase. Having rotated one way, the seat rebounds back toward the vehicle seat behind it. Less energy is involved than in the initial impact, but the movement is real.
Each feature targets one of those phases.
The load leg
A telescoping leg extending from the base down to the vehicle floor. It gives the base a second point of contact with the vehicle structure, so instead of the whole assembly rotating around the belt path, the leg braces it.
What it does: reduces downward and forward rotation during the initial impact, and absorbs some energy rather than transmitting it all to the child.
Constraints:
- Needs solid floor beneath it. Some vehicles have underfloor storage compartments where a load leg cannot be used, or requires the compartment to be filled per the vehicle manual.
- Adds bulk to the base and takes up footwell space.
- Usually cannot be used in aircraft installations.
- Must actually reach the floor with firm contact and be set at a permitted angle.
The anti-rebound bar
A padded bar on the base or shell that rests against the vehicle seat back.
What it does: limits rebound rotation after the initial impact, and adds stability to the installed seat, which some parents notice as a seat that simply feels more planted.
Constraints:
- Takes front-to-back space, which can matter behind a tall driver.
- Must contact the vehicle seat back as designed.
- Some seats use the carrier handle in a locked position for a similar function — check what your manual says the handle position should be.

If you are choosing between two seats and one has a load leg, that is a reasonable tiebreaker — it addresses the larger phase of the crash. But it should not outrank fit, correct installation, or whether you can use the seat properly every day. A well-installed basic seat outperforms a premium seat installed loose, every time.
What neither one does
Neither feature is required for certification, and their absence does not make a seat unsafe. Every seat sold has met the same federal standard. These are refinements above that floor, not the difference between protected and unprotected.
Neither compensates for:
- An installation with more than an inch of movement at the belt path.
- A harness with pinchable slack.
- A wrong recline angle. See recline angles.

Those five things account for the overwhelming majority of real-world performance differences. The features on this page are the last few percent.
If your seat has one
- Load leg: check the vehicle manual for underfloor storage at that position, ensure firm floor contact, set the angle within the permitted range, and re-check after moving the seat.
- Anti-rebound bar: confirm it contacts the vehicle seat back as the manual describes, and check the carrier handle is in whatever position your manual specifies for travel.
- Both: a seat can have both, and there is no conflict.
The practical answer
Buy the seat that fits your child, fits your vehicle, and that you can install correctly without a fight. If two candidates are equal on those, prefer the load leg. If your budget does not stretch to either, spend the difference on getting the install checked instead — it will do more for your child's safety than either feature.
