Flying with a small child produces a specific kind of confusion, because the rules on aircraft are unlike the rules on the ground and much of the advice online blurs the two. The clearest way to understand it: an aeroplane seat has a lap belt and nothing else. No shoulder belt, no top tether, no lower anchors. Every product decision follows from that single fact.
The two approved routes
An FAA-approved car seat
Most harnessed car seats sold in the US carry a label stating they are certified for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft. If that sentence is on your seat's label, it can be used on a plane, installed with the aircraft lap belt through the correct belt path.
Advantages: your child is in a familiar restraint, it works at both ends of the journey, and it protects them during turbulence, which is where most in-flight injuries actually happen. Disadvantages: you carry it through the airport, it may not fit narrow-bodied aircraft seats, and it is one more heavy thing on a day already full of heavy things.
The CARES harness
CARES is a fabric harness that loops around the aircraft seat back and works with the aeroplane's own lap belt to provide upper-body restraint. It is the only harness-type device of its kind approved by the FAA for use in flight. It weighs around a pound, packs into a small pouch, and installs in a couple of minutes.
Its limits are firm and worth memorising:
- Roughly 22 to 44 pounds.
- Up to about 40 inches tall.
- The child must be able to sit upright unassisted.
- Aircraft use only — it is not a car restraint and provides no protection in a vehicle.
Booster seats cannot be used during taxi, takeoff and landing on an aircraft. A booster works by positioning a shoulder belt, and aeroplanes do not have one. Bringing a booster on board as your child's restraint is a common and understandable mistake that leaves you with nothing usable at the gate.

The options worth considering
CARES harness

The original and, in practical terms, the only approved harness device of its type for aircraft. Packs to about the size of a paperback, works on essentially any commercial aircraft seat, and installs without tools. Expensive for a strip of webbing, which is a fair complaint, though the alternative is carrying a car seat through three terminals.

If you need a restraint at the destination, a genuinely light harnessed seat solves both ends of the trip. Weight is the whole specification here — the difference between a light seat and a heavy one is the difference between a manageable connection and a miserable one. Check the label says certified for aircraft.
Car seat travel cart or backpack strap

Not a restraint — a way of moving one. A wheeled cart or a backpack harness turns a car seat from a two-arm carry into something you can push or wear, which is what makes travelling with a seat viable at all when you also have luggage and a child.

For seats going into the hold or gate-checked. Protects against the handling that causes most travel damage, and a padded one is worth the difference. Note that a checked seat with unknown handling history is a reason some families prefer to bring the seat into the cabin instead.
Practical notes for the day
- Window seat. Car seats generally must go in a window seat so they do not block egress. Airlines enforce this.
- Book the seat. A child under two travelling as a lap infant has no seat to restrain them in. Using a car seat or CARES means buying a seat.
- Practise CARES once at home. Looping it over an aircraft seat back for the first time in a narrow aisle with people waiting behind you is not the moment to read the instructions.
- Keep the label visible. Cabin crew occasionally ask to see the aircraft-approval wording on a car seat. Knowing where it is saves an argument.
- Bulkhead rows and some exit rows may not permit child restraints. Check when selecting seats.
The turbulence argument is the one that persuades most sceptical parents. Unexpected turbulence is the leading cause of in-flight injury, and a lap infant or an unrestrained toddler is the passenger least able to stay in the seat. Restraint on a plane is not primarily about crashes.
What CARES does not do
It is aircraft-only. There is no configuration in which CARES restrains a child in a car — it depends on an aircraft seat back and a lap-only belt, neither of which exists in a vehicle in that form. Renting at the destination
Rental car seats are a legitimate fallback but come with real caveats: you cannot verify crash history, expiry dates are sometimes ignored, the model is unknown until you arrive, and the manual is frequently missing. If you rent, inspect the label for the expiry date, look for cracks and missing parts, and be prepared to refuse it. Booking a seat does not guarantee one is available.
