Between roughly eighteen months and three years, a large number of children discover they can get an arm out of a harness. It usually happens on a motorway, and it is one of the more alarming things to see in a rear-view mirror.
The good news is that the mechanical causes are limited and fixable. The bad news is that the product category marketed at this problem is one you should mostly walk past.
Check the mechanics first
Harness tightness
This is the cause in most cases. A harness that passes the pinch test — no horizontal fold of webbing pinchable at the collarbone — is genuinely difficult for a small child to get out of. One with an inch of slack is not.
Tighten after every buckle-up, not just the first time each day. And check what the child is wearing: a thick coat or jumper under the harness creates exactly the slack that makes escape possible, which is another reason for thin layers under the harness.
Chest clip position
The chest clip holds the shoulder straps in position on the torso. At armpit level, it keeps the straps over the shoulders. Slid down onto the belly — which happens constantly — the straps splay outward and an arm slips out easily.
Armpit level. Every trip. This single check ends a surprising proportion of escape careers.
Strap height
Forward-facing harness slots should be at or above the shoulders. Too low and the straps angle outward across the upper arm rather than over the shoulder, which makes them easy to shrug off.
Do the three checks in order every time: straps at correct height, chest clip at armpit, pinch test at the collarbone. It takes about eight seconds once it is habit, and it is the entire mechanical solution for most children.
What not to buy
Aftermarket chest clip locks, buckle covers and anti-escape straps are sold widely and should be avoided. They are not crash tested with your seat, they are not approved by seat manufacturers, and critically they add time and complexity to removing a child in an emergency — a crash, a fire, water. Emergency responders need that buckle to work exactly as designed.
The same applies to improvised solutions: tape, cable ties, extra straps, or threading the harness differently to make it harder to escape. Any modification to the harness path changes how loads transfer in a crash.
The behavioural half
Once the mechanics are right, remaining escapes are usually about attention and autonomy rather than physics. A few things that work:
- Pull over. Every time. Safely, as soon as you can. Stop the car, re-buckle without conversation, continue. A child who learns that escaping ends the journey rather than producing a reaction usually stops within a week or two.
- Keep the reaction flat. Shouting is attention. Calm and boring is the goal.
- Give them a job. Handing over the chest clip to click, or letting them choose which side to get in from, converts a battle into a routine.
- Check comfort. Overheating, a twisted strap, a seam digging in, a full nappy. Some escapes are complaints.
- Occupy the hands on longer drives. Soft toys, snacks where appropriate, audio. Not hard objects — see the loose object rule.
When it is more than a phase
Some children escape persistently, and for some the cause is sensory or developmental rather than behavioural. Options worth discussing with a technician:
- Seats with tamper-resistant buckles. Certified restraints designed to be harder for a child to release while remaining releasable by an adult.

None of these are things to order on a guess. A technician with special-needs training can look at the specific child and the specific seat.

What about unbuckling the buckle itself?
Some children work out the release button rather than slipping the straps. This is more concerning and less common. The same rules apply — no aftermarket locks — and a tamper-resistant buckle seat is the certified answer. In the meantime, pull-over consistency matters even more, because there is no mechanical fix to fall back on.
The one-line version
Tighten the harness, move the chest clip to armpit level, pull over every single time, and do not buy anything that makes the buckle harder to open.
